• Begin intravenous infusion of 0.9% normal saline at 250 ml/hr.
• Regular insulin infusion of 1 unit/hour until blood glucose reaches 260 mg/dL.
• Change intravenous infusion to Dextrose 5% and 0.45% normal saline when blood glucose level reaches 260 mg/dL.
• Contact physician for insulin orders when blood glucose level reaches 260 mg/dL.
• Reduce infusion rate to 200 ml/hr for blood pressure 120/80 mm Hg or greater.
